 The Lodge

Located in the heart of a 7673 acre working plantation in scenic South side Virginia, Falkland Farms' Bed and Breakfast offers a peaceful retreat for all with seasonal views, hiking trails, fishing or just relaxing on the porch.

Adjacent to Staunton River State Park and John H. Kerr Reservoir, there are a variety of activities available to occupy our guests.

About the Lodge

The Lodge is fondly referred to as the 'Sydnor House' as the original owner was Playwright William Harrison Sydnor. No one knows exactly how old the original house is, but it appears to be an Early 1800's work. In the early 1900's Col. Ira Vaughan purchased and remodeled the house in the style of his favorite Swiss hotel. The standard two-story farm house became a gracious seven bedroom lodge with three great rooms and a wrap-around porch. The 6,000 sq. ft. Lodge was completely renovated in 1993. Modern conveniences like central heat and air conditioning were added with care taken to retain the original architecture and ambiance of Col. Vaughan's design. Each room has been restored as close to its original furnishings as possible. Virtually every bedroom has its own fireplace, and the furnishings, though simple, are in many cases the original pieces of the Colonel's furniture.

The adjacent Banquet Hall, open summer of 2003, was built in keeping with the 1920's style. It can hold up to 200 people with an ample deck providing breathtaking views.

Local Attractions

Falkland Farms borders Staunton River State Park and the John H. Kerr Reservoir, also known as Buggs Island Lake. Staunton River State Park is a scenic park located on the point of the Staunton (Roanoke) River and the Dan River. The park has tennis courts, an Olympic size swimming pool, and miles of hiking, biking, and equestrian trails. You can also rent a canoe, jon boat, or a paddle boat to enjoy the lake. If you bring your own boat, the park has two boat ramps into the Lake.

Buggs Island Lake

Buggs Island Lake (Kerr Reservoir) is a 50,000 acre lake created in the early 1950's as a alternative power source for the South side Virginia area. Kerr is the largest in a series of dams in the Roanoke River Basin, and is home to some of the best freshwater fishing in Virginia. Kerr boasts record catches on Striped Bass and Large-mouth Bass each year. In addition to these two primary game fish, there is also excellent fishing for Catfish, Crappie, White Bass, and Bream. Although the Kerr spills over into North Carolina, Resident and Non-Resident Fishing Licenses from Virginia are honored on the entire lake.

Auto Racing

In addition to the Park and the Lake, Halifax County has many other attractions. Just down the road from the farm is South Boston Speedway, hailed as the World's fastest short track. The races are held there about every other week, and constantly provide great action for the fans. Admission varies depending on the type of race.
A little further down the road is Virginia International Raceway, one of the most challenging road courses in the world. Admission varies depending on event.

Green's Folly Country Club is the local public golf course. It is an 18 hole par 71 course that allows the novice to relax and play while challenging the better golfer to attain a low score. You will find it to be in great shape for a public course, and greens fees are extremely reasonable.

Historic Sights

Halifax County and the surrounding counties are rich in history, and days can be passed following historic trails, viewing old Civil War sights, and visiting local museums.
